Bio

Katherine M. Johnson, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Tulane University. She specializes in the areas of gender, family, health, and reproductive technology. Broadly, she examines four major themes in her work: postmodern families; gender and work-family issues; reproductive justice; and the intersections of family, medicine, and law. For the last four years, she has been conducting the Working & Nursing Study—an in-depth qualitative interview study that examines workplace support for breastfeeding employees in a variety of industries and occupations. To date, she has authored more than two-dozen journal articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries that address topics such as infertility help-seeking and socio-psychological distress, abortion counseling laws, family formation through egg/embryo donation and surrogacy, childbirth support and technology, and breastfeeding experiences and support at work.
